Whole Life Carbon / Net Zero
Whole life carbon (WLC) assessments are required by the Greater London Authority (GLA) for all major developments in London. The GLA have produced a toolkit to assist with the assessment. The Climate Consultants can help determine the inputs into the toolkit and use the toolkit quantify the carbon produced throughout the life of a development.
With the effects of climate change becoming ever more devastating across the globe, it is important that new developments provide robust WLC assessments. The Climate Consultants have experience of supporting a diverse range of developments, building on many decades of experience, and ensure the calculations are accurately produced based upon robust scientific knowledge and expertise.
In addition to the WLC assessment, referable applications are also required to provide a Circular Economy Statement, which focuses more on the material lifecycle of buildings.
The Climate Consultants encourage design teams to consider circularity, flexibility and adaptability from the earliest design stages to embed key opportunities for reducing material use and waste generation in the design proposal.
The Circular Economy Statement requires the development to commit to key performance indicators around material efficiency, waste generation, and diversion of waste from landfill, which will be used to verify as-built information post-construction.
The Mayor of London has declared a climate emergency and has set an ambition for London to be net zero-carbon, which means that all new major developments must play a part by meeting the net zero carbon requirements in the London Plan.
The London Plan requires all major development proposals to submit a detailed energy assessment to demonstrate how the zero-carbon target will be met within the framework of the energy hierarchy. This is entirely separate from the WLC assessment.
