Greenhouse Gas Assessments

Greenhouse gas assessments are an integral consideration for all developments, a requirement for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and more recently being requested by many local authorities for developments of all sizes.

With the effects of climate change becoming ever more devastating across the globe, it is important that new developments promote a sustainable approach. This can only be quantified through a robust greenhouse gas assessment, for which The Climate Consultants can help.

TCC have experience of supporting a diverse range of developments and sizes, building on many decades of experience and a wide array of backgrounds.

For GHG assessments to be robust they must consider all potential sources of emissions during the whole life cycle of the development, including the construction, operation and decommission. Furthermore, they should consider all pollutants, not just those regulated under international treaties. Typical considerations include:

  • Construction materials
  • Construction machinery
  • Construction traffic
  • Water use
  • Development traffic
  • Onsite plant
  • Electricity use
  • Repair/Refurbishment
  • Land use change
  • Consumables
  • Refrigerants
  • Decommissioning machinery
  • Decommissioning traffic
  • Material re-use

The Climate Consultants work with clients to discuss ways for help minimise GHG emissions. This initially involves recommendations of simple ways to be sustainable. TCC provide support throughout the design process, giving high-level advice as the scheme evolves to ensure all options are considered.

One of the key aspects is GHG emissions from consumables, which is often neglected by many. Emissions associated with food alone typically outweigh all other emissions produced throughout the life cycle of a development. While taking sustainable approaches to the construction of developments is useful, minimising consumable emissions will vastly reduce GHGs from a development. TCC provides expert advice for all aspects of developments.

“Best greenhouse gas assessment we’ve ever reviewed on behalf of the Council, it would be fantastic if we could get you to support us with our assessments”
